Playing pinup and going no-poo

What do you think readers? Should I quit my job at the supermarket and start modeling?

Erh, maybe not, I can remember the photographer being amazed at how bad I was at keeping my eyes open for my graduation pics...I guess I'm just really flash sensitive.

Anyway, last week after complaining I wasn't having any luck at the flea-markets, I went to a couple I haven't been to for a while and came home with a bag full of stuff! Among other, this cute bathing/gymnastics suit. The rest will be in the next post...

On a different note, today it has been 2 months since I last used shampoo. Yes, I've been bitten by the no-poo bug. For the first four weeks or so my hair was pretty gross, but then it changed, and lately I've only washed it once or twice a week. Hold on, wash-but not with shampoo? Nope. At first I tried the conditioner only (CO) method, but I'm not sure if it worked or not, as my hair wasn't used to no shampoo and was still over producing oils. Plus I really didn't like the to me, strong smell of the conditioner (I used erittäin hieno suomalainen hiushoito).

So I switched to using baking soda and rinsing with a vinegar and water mix. Sometimes I mix in a bit of honey with the baking soda as well. My goal is to eventually wash with water only (WO) as my parents and at least one of my brothers have been doing for the last year, and their hair looks great! But they all have short hair...

To be honest, my hair doesn't feel or look that different, but then I've always had pretty good hair as I use so little product (and very seldom) and usually let it air dry anyway. The best thing about my new method though, is that I don't have to wash it every two days anymore. This is the first time I've done pin-curls since I stopped with the shampoo, and I'm very interested in seeing how long they will last. I will be pinning them up again over night to hopefully make them last longer.

Sound interesting? Google "no-poo" and you'll find loads of links...

And to finish, here's a list of reason to why I wanted to try this;

-I'm lazy. I cannot be bothered to re-set my hair every two days, so why not try a method that would allow me to keep it set for longer? Don't know if it will work yet though, testing in progress!
-My parents and brother are doing it, and they only use water and it still looks great. I should have the same genes, right?
-I have atopic skin, which means I have dry skin and have to keep using creme to keep my rash at bay. My scalp was getting really dry and itchy, and shampoo apparently dries out both skin and hair. My scalp feels better now.
-I got tired of buying and trying new brands of shampoo all the time, as nothing seemed to be quite right for me, my hair and my scalp. And because of my dry scalp, I though I might have dandruff, so I used dandruff shampoo (very bad for nature). No dandruff now...
-The environment is probably happier with less shampoo in it, and fewer plastic shampoo bottles.
-I'm not very big on consuming. Especially when it comes to products/chemicals we don't necessarily need. What we do need, I try to get the eco-friendly version of. Baking soda in a paper carton with a small plastic lid means less waste than a bunch of plastic bottles right?

Thank you for this post! I've been interested in this for a while (my boyfriend's been doing it for years, but he's got short hair, too), but am not sure if I can stand the first weeks of greasy hair ... I already use natural certificated schampoo and wash my hair only twice a week, but I could go even one step further.
Some questions I do have:
I dye my hair about four times a year - do you think this will spoil everything? If I want to dye it "naturally" I have to change my hairdresser and I don't wanna do that since I'm so happy with my present. Perhaps I could stop dying completely since I'm going closer to my own colour, but I'm not there quite yet.
And what about other hairproducts like hairspray and -powder (chemicals, heh), are they easy to get off with only water? My boyfriend gets his stuff off, but again, his hair is short...

You look lovely and your curls are just perfect :)

My hair is dead dry and I recently had it chemically treated so I think this sounds great. I think it sure needs some leaving alone. How did I not come across this before?!

WOW! Absolutely perfect pinup girl:) Beautiful photo, lovely suit! And your hair looks very good in this picture!
I am a bit afraid of this no-poo, my hair is very long, but it sounds so good, maybe I should give it a try...

I love that picture of you--you're so cute!!! :)

I've been toying with the idea of going no-poo for a long, long time. I tried it once a couple years ago and chickened out. lol. I'd like to try it again though, as I really have a hard time with the chemicals in shampoo, plus the idea of not having to wash my hair 4 times a week is appealing... ;)

Can't wait to hear about the results with the pincurls on your no-poo hair!

Ina; Thank you, glad you found it interesting! Baking soda is the answer. The first few weeks _should_ not really be a problem if you wash with baking soda, but at first you'll probably have to wash quite often as the hair is still overproducing oils. (I didn't, let me know how it goes if you do). Baking soda should also remove any product, such as hairspray, but I have not personally tried this yet. So what I would do is use baking soda at first, then try water only and use baking soda again only when necessary. Hair dyeing should not be a problem, apart from the whole "might not be so good for you hair OR the environment" -thing ;)

I found a helpful site you might wanna check out; http://babyslime.livejournal.com/174054.html

Shallow Mallow; Thank you! It's worth a try, you can always go back to shampoo or try the conditioner-only method as an alternative.

Laucica; Thanks!! The worst thing that could happen is that your hair looks greasy for a while ;) And you can always go back to shampoo.

Casey; Oh, thanks! :) I almost went back to shampoo a few times...but the baking soda really helped! I also did A LOT of research before I started, here's one of the better sites I found; http://babyslime.livejournal.com/174054.html
I'll mention how it goes with the pin-curls in my next post, so far so good!

thank you for your answer! I really think I will try this out. And perhaps try to do some homemade hairspray as I've anyways been annoyed with the chemical ones... Will see with the dyeing...

Vilken härlig bild! Så perfekt pin-up =)

Kram!

Ina; Glad if I can be of any help! I'm also interested in making my own hairspray, I can't stand the smell of the commercial ones :/

Erika; Åh, tack! Lockarna ser rätt bra ut ännu, borstade ut dem i tisdags, alltså 5:e dagen idag!

So many bottles so little time! Mycket modigt!

Wow. Looking fabulous. I have to say the "no-shampoo" sounds very interesting. I don't know whether I could do it. I absolutely have if my hair is dirty. With shorter hair it would be a different story but...

Mrs Munster; Thanks! I find it really interesting, and there are so many other things you can use to wash your hair with that are much better for the environment...Plus alternative cleaning products, deodorants and more!
